With the time of cherry blossoms coming up, Bodhi's been spending lots of time in the kitchen lately. Mostly when Galen has been out of their rooms and distracted with other things. He's been rather secretive about it. Up to and including getting their parrot droid Ester to keep an eye on Galen.

But now it's ready and just in time.

He wakes Galen in the morning with a kiss, shifting carefully so he doesn't dislodge the cats. "Happy anniversary, my love."

Bodhi suggests a hike up the mountain. It's starting to get chilly but Bodhi's use to the cold. With the warmth of Milliways' summer, he was almost starting to miss the feeling of cool, crispy air.

Leaving the cats in Teja's care for the night, Bodhi hefts his pack and takes Galen's hand. "Ready?"
imthepilot: (refugee AU Cant pray)
Bodhi felt like cattle, shuffled from pen to pen in the big immigration and asylum processing centre.

Every shade of human misery was caught in those pens with him – children and the elderly, men who had left their families behind or were here to follow them over. Those who had lost everything, or only parts. Quite often of themselves judging by the way their sleeves hung flat or they leant heavily on crutches.

So many had lost their souls along the way too. Eyes flat and dead as the friends and family they lost.

Step up to the white mark, stay in line... )

The galley wasn’t exactly a good place to be. It was hot as hell and stank of rotting food, the last of that they had left. It was narrow and dangerous – no more than a propane hotplate balanced on a plank of wood that could fall at any moment.

But it was a slightly quieter corner than the rest of the packed boat. And even the rotting food smell wasn’t as bad as the rotting flesh smell everywhere else.

Please, please, let the girls be safe.

Bodhi regretted that he’d never really had faith. If he’d believed in Allah or God or any deity at all, he’d at least have someone to mutter those prayers too. Rather than just losing them to the open air.

Nothing more than swearing. Just a release valve.

And even if his arms were pock-marked by oil burns and splashes, it was better than the other options.

Two more had died overnight, their bodies tossed into the sea. And at least one more wouldn’t make it to see another sunset. And a storm was coming.

“Hurry up with that food! You have other duties.” The captain shouted and Bodhi winced.

He knew the bastard wasn’t hungry, at least not for the pathetic meal of beans and rice Bodhi had managed to scratch together.

Bodhi kept reminding himself that it could be worse. There were kids on board, girls not much younger than Pema. While the captain’s hands were on Bodhi, they weren’t on the poor girls.

Please, please, let this not have happened to his sisters.

He had paid more for their passage, smuggled them out on what seemed to be a bigger, sturdier boat. It meant he had had to stay behind, pay the lesser bribe for a smaller boat. One that looked like it was barely floating. But what did that matter.

As long as the girls were safe.

Or so he told himself. Every night, squeezed into a corner, held in place by the crush of desperate humanity.

His own life didn’t matter, as long as the girls were save. And no-one was safe at home any more.

They were the lucky ones, if you could call it that. When the bombs had rained down from the sky, their house had been spared. Even if they had had to climb over the rubble of their neighbours to get out when the thunder stopped. Bodhi had done his best to shield his sisters’ eyes from the crumpled remains that may well have been the family next door.

Bodhi was educated, literate, thanks to his maternal grandmother who had raised them after his mother and brother had joined the insurgents. And that gave him and his sisters prospects the rest of the family didn’t have.

But bullets didn’t discriminate. And suicide bombers did.

The government depot when Bodhi worked had been bombed twice before Bodhi had managed to save the money to bribe people smugglers to get his sisters away to Europe.

The third time his truck was flipped by the blast, leaving him with burns to his back as he tried to crawl free.

It was time to get out of here. Nothing was left of the city of his birth. Nothing but blood and madness.

When he heard the shouts from on deck, he armed himself with the galley’s only sharp knife. He’d heard the crew joke about selling them to slavers, to pirates, to human traffickers. Even make bets about who would be worth the most.

And Bodhi wasn’t going down that way. If needed, he’d go down fighting.

Please, please, let my sisters have had a clean death. Anything but this.

But then a name was called across the boat. An aid agency he’d heard of in the news. It echoed across the deck like a wave of relief and Bodhi put down the knife.

Thank you. Whoever is listening, thank you. Just let them have my sisters.

Bodhi takes the card Jay give them and opens the door. It opens into large five star hotel suite - champagne chilling in a bucket and roses by the bed. In the corner of the living room are several large crates labelled climbing equipment. There's a welcome pack with maps and travel guides, ferry tickets and the number a car service.

Bodhi lets them into their room, bursting into a brighter smile. The Bar, or someone, has done up their room. Rather than the lights coming on, hundreds of tiny sphere float near the roof, glittering like firelight or little stars.

Their bed has been laid with sheets of Aeien silk, soft as breath and warm to the touch. The windows have been hung with draped garlands of flowers, lending everything a sweet, subtle scent.

The kitchen has been fully stocked with all their favourite things, and new toys for the cats.

"Wow." It's all Bodhi can say.

There's a massive mound of trailing purple flowers. Bodhi smiles and steps forward, parting them. Turns out the mound is a tree, it's flower laden branches reaching the floor and forming a protected hollow around the trunk. Like a living cave, dim and private. The light of the greenhouse dapples against their skin as Bodhi pulls Galen inside, kissing him soundly.

Bodhi leads Galen up to their rooms, setting the cat and the basket down. "How about we take a bath. And get you out of those ridiculous clothes."

Bodhi lets them into their rooms, guiding Galen to the kitchen table. "You just sit and I'll get the steam bath ready."

Bodhi leads Galen by the hand back to their room. The cats are out somewhere, having adventures of their own. Their rooms are warm and welcoming, the little strings of lights on the balcony giving everything a green lint. A feeling of being alive.

Silver confetti still in their hair, Bodhi pulls Galen into a slow, loving kiss.

Bodhi walks upstairs, hand in hand with Galen. Kyber trots along with them, stopping every now and then to try to clean the melting snow off his fur.

"Inside, little one. I'll dry you off." As soon as he gets out of his wet boots.

Bodhi puts Myrrh down, shutting the windows and cat doors to stop the cats from getting out again. He pauses to let Nahts in from the balcony. "Hey little one. You avoiding people too?"

She runs right over to where Galen is holding Kyber, mewing to play.

Bodhi only just glances over his shoulder as Dorian lets himself out. The blood is pounding in his ears, too loud to let anything else be heard.

Galen wants him. Galen wants to marry him. Galen will marry him. Even after- after Lyra. After everything.

"Galen, I- Is this real?"

Bodhi takes Galen's hand and walks back through the door and back into the base. The cerebration is in full swing, happy shouts echoing from the hall. They run into only one other person on their way to Bodhi's room. The young lieutenant who had escorted Galen earlier.

Nika salutes, eyes drifting from Bodhi's face to their joined hands and back again. "Sir, Dr Erso."

"Lieutenant." Bodhi acknowledges, his voice a tense growl. Ready to deck the young man for a word out of place.

Instead the young man stutters shyly. "Sir?" He starts uncertainly. "I hope- have a good night, sir. You- you've earnt it."

Bodhi relaxes a little, resting his metal hand on the youth's shoulder. "As have you, lieutenant. Now go and enjoy yourself."

The boy nods, freckled cheeks warming with a blush. "Sir, yes sir." There's something about the way he steps aside to let them pass, watching them go. A crush perhaps? Or something more like hero worship?

Bodhi doesn't speak again till they're inside his room, the door firmly closed.
imthepilot: (Happy)
[from here]

Bodhi takes the box from Galen as they enter their rooms, tucking it all away in the fresher for later. There's enough left over for a rather decadent brunch tomorrow.

He drifts back over to Galen smiling. "Now, I think I promised to take advantage of you. But I'm not sure you're drunk enough."

There rooms are a bit of a mess. Bodhi spend all night cooking and as much as he cleans as he goes, there's still a lot left to do. But it can wait. He puts the last ingredients away to be made into something else tomorrow.

He turns to Galen, shedding his jacket. "That was enjoyable. I missed markets like that."

With Galen finally being released from the Infantry today, Bodhi has pulled out all the stops to make sure their rooms are ready. The bar has been very helpful, providing him with everything he needs to make it work for them.

The rooms are large and airy, open planned living and dinning. Thick carpets and warm colours make it homely and comfortable.

The bar has made sure Bodhi's kitchen has all the appliances he's use to and a big pantry. All the lovely hardwood benches and lots of storage.

The bedroom faces out onto the balcony, just as the living room does, giving them a view of the lake and the gardens. There's an office and workshop for Galen too, ready to be set up the way he wants it.

And a bathroom with a water fresher big enough for two, and of all things - a spa bath.

The balcony has been lined with pots, one wall lined with climbing frames, ready for creeps, flowers and climbing legumes. The kitchen window is also lined with little pots of fresh herbs.

Bodhi opens the door for Galen, biting his lip and hoping Galen likes it.

Bodhi's still sitting on the grass when Galen comes out; thick, angry tears drying on his cheeks. There's a core of rage in his gut but it's impudent rage. Too much he can't control, can't fix. Too much he can't undo.
imthepilot: (Drawn - shellshocked)
It happened so fast, Bodhi was barely certain of the sequence of events. He had to go over them, again and again to be sure.

He’d travelled with the crew of the large cargo hauler back to the navy dock-yards. Ignoring their jibes the whole way. After the altercation, he was careful not to rise to their jokes. And they were careful not to make the jokes too personal. But they kept joking all the same. Joking about Bodhi, and about his sojourn with the station chief.

imthepilot: (Trying to explain)
Packing his things to go was hard. So hard. Not that he had much but... it was the leaving that hurt.

The last month of his life had been the best he could remember having, burns and all. It hardly mattered. He didn't care about the disfiguring scars. What did they matter, compared to what he got in return.

A month with Galen.

He owed the medic his thanks. He'd been baking and cooking all day, determined to leave Galen with everything he needed. The sweet tart, he took down to the medic before heading back to his room to cook one last meal for Galen before he has to fly away tomorrow.
